It is a road filled with extraordinary love, fierce advocacy, and quiet heartbreak. There are doctor's appointments and therapy sessions, milestones celebrated and milestones missed, questions without easy answers, and a longing for your child to flourish in every way possible.

If you're walking this road, know this: God sees you.

He sees every appointment you schedule, every form you fill out, every tear you cry after your child has fallen asleep, and every prayer whispered in the middle of the night.

In this episode of Prayers for Parents, we meditate on Romans 8:19–23, a passage that reminds us that all creation is groaning under the weight of sin's curse—but that one day Christ will make all things new.

Living in a World That Groans

The Apostle Paul writes:

"For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God... We know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now... we ourselves... groan inwardly as we wait eagerly... the redemption of our bodies."
Romans 8:19–23

When your child faces developmental delays, chronic illness, disability, or other significant challenges, it's natural to wonder why the world feels so painfully broken.

The Bible doesn't ignore that question.

Instead, it explains that we live in a creation that has been affected by sin. Disease, suffering, and death were never part of God's original design. They are reminders that the world is not yet as it should be.

Yet even as creation groans, it groans with hope.

One day Christ will return, and everything that has been broken will be restored.

Holding Hope While We Wait

Parents of children with special needs often find themselves living in the tension between faith and longing.

We pray for healing.

We pursue therapies.

We advocate tirelessly.

We celebrate progress.

And still, there are moments when we quietly ask:

"Why, Lord?"

Scripture gives us permission to bring those questions to God.

He is not intimidated by our grief.

He welcomes us to come honestly, trusting that His love remains steadfast even when His purposes are hidden.

Balancing Advocacy and Acceptance

One of the greatest challenges for parents is learning to balance faithful advocacy with peaceful acceptance.

We want to provide every opportunity for our children.

We research therapies.

We attend appointments.

We seek specialists.

These efforts can be wonderful expressions of love and stewardship.

But there is also wisdom in knowing when to pause.

Sometimes our children need another therapy session.

Sometimes they simply need us to sit on the floor, laugh together, read another story, or enjoy who they already are.

Our children are not projects waiting to be completed.

They are image-bearers of God, worthy of delight today—not only after another milestone has been reached.

God Is Working in Parents, Too

Having a child with significant needs often changes the parents as much as it changes the child.

It teaches patience.

Dependence.

Humility.

Perseverance.

Compassion.

It reveals how little control we truly possess and how desperately we need God's grace each day.

The work God is doing in our hearts is part of His good purpose.

As He shapes us into the likeness of Christ, He reminds us that faithfulness often looks less like fixing every problem and more like loving well in the midst of them.

Looking Toward the Day All Things Are Made New

Romans 8 lifts our eyes beyond today's hardships.

There is coming a day when every disability, every disease, every developmental delay, every tear, and every sorrow will be swallowed up in the glory of Christ's kingdom.

There will be no more pain.

No more missed milestones.

No more wondering if our children will ever overcome the challenges they face.

Until that day, we continue to advocate, to pray, to trust, and to hope—knowing that the Lord who holds the future also holds our children.

A Prayer for Parents of Children with Special Needs

O Lord,

Maker of heaven and earth
And everything in between,

Remind us of this:

How even though sin has marred your creation—
Creating disease and difficulty where there would otherwise be health and life—
Still your glory rings within the temporary reign of darkness which clouds our vision.

This is ever so in our children,
Our dearest loves,
Who struggle in mighty ways.

We have asked you time and again in the blackest of nights,

"Why, O God, must it be this way?"

In the heavy spaces where we wait for answers,
Or actively seek solutions, cures, remedies—
Anything
To lighten the load our child with special needs faces,
And to lighten our own load in holding them up.

In all of this, hold us close to you.

Keep our sight focused heavenward,
Aimed at a glory beyond this world,
Where there is no death or heartache,
No missed milestones—again.

For this, may we balance intervention and therapies
With an acceptance for the lot we have been given.

Help us bear the reality that having a child with great needs
Requires more work on ourselves
Than work toward helping our child overcome their difficulties.

Help us to make peace with the appointments.

Teach us to know when to draw the line,
And simply enjoy our child as they are,
Not continually pursuing what we hope they are to one day become.

Thank you for the now.

Thank you for how your glory appears in our children despite their difficulties,
Showing us that light is greater than darkness.

Though the Fall obscures the goodness we long to experience today,
We can still rejoice that someday all shall be well,
Even though all is not as it should be right now.

Strengthen us as we advocate.

May we do so with humility,
With gratitude,
And with a peace that surpasses all understanding.
