How to Control Your Emotions Biblically | A Prayer for Christian Parents
Emotions are a beautiful gift from God.
Joy allows us to delight in His blessings. Grief reminds us that love has real depth. Compassion moves us toward those who are hurting. Even fear can alert us to danger.
But because of the Fall, our emotions no longer function perfectly.
Sometimes we feel overwhelming anxiety over circumstances that are ultimately in God's hands. Other times we struggle with anger, bitterness, discouragement, or numbness. There are moments when we don't feel what we should, and moments when we feel things that pull us away from God's truth.
As Christian parents, we often experience these emotional battles while carrying the weight of caring for our children, stewarding our homes, and navigating the uncertainties of life. The good news is that Scripture never tells us to be ruled by our emotions. Instead, it calls us to submit every thought, every feeling, and every fear to Christ.
What Does the Bible Say About Our Emotions?
The Bible never teaches that emotions are inherently sinful.
God created us as emotional beings because we bear His image. Throughout Scripture we see righteous joy, righteous sorrow, righteous compassion, and even righteous anger.
The problem isn't that we have emotions.
The problem is that our emotions have also been affected by sin.
Rather than allowing our feelings to become our authority, Scripture teaches us to let God's Word be our guide.
Paul writes:
"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." — 1 Corinthians 10:13
Whether we are tempted toward fear, sinful anger, despair, or unhealthy patterns of thinking, God is faithful to provide strength for obedience.
Taking Every Thought Captive
One of the most powerful verses for emotional and spiritual health is found in 2 Corinthians.
"For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh... We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ." — 2 Corinthians 10:3–6
Our greatest battles are often invisible.
An anxious thought.
A bitter memory.
A fearful prediction about the future.
A lie that whispers we are failing.
Scripture reminds us that these battles are spiritual. Instead of allowing our minds to run unchecked, we are called to examine our thoughts in light of God's truth and willingly place them under Christ's authority.
When Feelings Become Our Master
Our culture often encourages us to "follow your heart" or "live your truth."
The Bible offers a different invitation.
God never asks us to deny our emotions, but He does call us to submit them to Him.
Sometimes that means choosing forgiveness before we feel forgiving.
Sometimes it means obeying even when we don't feel motivated.
Sometimes it means trusting God's promises while anxiety still lingers.
Faith isn't the absence of emotion.
Faith is choosing obedience even when our emotions pull us in another direction.
Hope for Anxiety, Anger, Grief, and Depression
Every parent experiences seasons of emotional struggle.
Perhaps you're carrying grief that feels unbearably heavy.
Perhaps anxiety about your children keeps you awake at night.
Perhaps anger comes more quickly than you'd like.
Or maybe you've entered a season where you simply feel numb.
God is not distant from your suffering.
He meets His children in every season with grace, wisdom, and strength.
Even when our emotions seem overwhelming, His presence remains constant.
He invites us to take the next faithful step, trusting Him with what we cannot control.
A Prayer for Surrendering Our Emotions
Scripture Reading
1 Corinthians 10:13
"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."
2 Corinthians 10:3–6
"For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete."
Lord,
We know that our emotions
Are a gift from you
Through which we can experience
The depth and richness
Of this life you've given us
But even these feelings
Have been marred by the Fall
And right now we acknowledge
That we do not always
Feel the things we should
That we feel things we shouldn't
Sometimes we do not feel at all
Even when it is right and good
To do so
We confess that we do not
Exercise dominion
Over our emotions
In the way you call us to
Please forgive us.
May we turn from our tendencies
To wallow in unwholesomeness
Remind us that venting is an illusion
That only stirs up strife
And that the Bible warns
Of the snares of the tongue
Teach us to keep our lips
On a short leash
So that in our anger
We may not speak rashly
And sin against a brother or sister.
In the absence of feeling,
As in times of depression and grief,
May your presence instead
Be the light that colors our moments
And brings warmth to our numbness
As we take the next step in obedience
Regardless of if our feelings follow.
As we venture through uncertainty
And wrestle anxious thoughts,
Strengthen us in our fight
To take every thought captive,
Surrendering each one to You
And pressing on in faith
To the work You call us to,
Unhindered by fear of the unknown.
For darkness is as light to You.
Nothing is outside of Your hand,
Even when it is beyond
Our control or understanding.
Help us put our feelings
In their rightful place—
At the feet of Jesus.
And may we never excuse our sin
With the deceit of emotions misplaced.
Because just as all matters
In this life should be weighed
According to Your wisdom,
So each feeling must be tested
Against the truth of Your Word.
Amen.
Final Encouragement
God never asks us to pretend our emotions don't exist.
He invites us to bring them to Him.
Every fear.
Every anxious thought.
Every angry response.
Every moment of grief.
Every season of numbness.
Our emotions make wonderful servants but terrible masters. As we continually place them at the feet of Jesus and measure them against the truth of Scripture, He transforms not only our thinking but also our hearts.
Today, whatever you're feeling, remember this: your emotions do not define reality—God's Word does. And His promises remain true even when your feelings waver.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Bible say our emotions are bad?
No. Emotions are part of God's good design. However, because of sin, our feelings can become disordered or lead us away from God's truth if they are not submitted to Him.
What does it mean to take every thought captive?
According to 2 Corinthians 10:3–6, taking every thought captive means examining our thoughts, fears, and beliefs in light of Scripture and bringing them into obedience to Christ rather than allowing them to control us.
How can I trust God when I feel anxious?
Begin by honestly bringing your fears before God in prayer. Meditate on His promises, remember His faithfulness, and choose the next act of obedience even while your emotions are still catching up.
Can Christians struggle with depression or grief?
Yes. Many faithful believers throughout Scripture experienced deep sorrow, grief, and despair. God meets His people with compassion and invites them to continue trusting Him, even when emotions are heavy.
