When Parenting Feels Like Planting Seeds

Parenting often resembles farming far more than building.

Builders see progress quickly.

Farmers do not.

A farmer faithfully prepares the soil, plants the seed, waters consistently, removes weeds, and patiently waits. Much of the work happens beneath the surface, invisible to everyone watching.

Christian parenting works much the same way.

Every prayer.

Every Bible story.

Every act of loving discipline.

Every conversation about truth.

Every example of forgiveness.

These are seeds planted in the hearts of our children.

Some may sprout quickly.

Others may take years before we see the fruit.

But none of them are wasted.

God Gives the Growth

Paul reminds believers:

"Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously." — 2 Corinthians 9:6

The principle of sowing and reaping reminds us that faithful investment matters.

But it also reminds us of something equally important:

We are not responsible for making seeds grow.

Only God can transform hearts.

Only the Holy Spirit can produce lasting spiritual fruit.

Our calling is faithfulness.

His work is growth.

That truth frees weary parents from carrying a burden God never intended them to bear.

Don't Grow Weary in Doing Good

One of the most beloved verses for Christian parents comes from Galatians:

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."— Galatians 6:9

Notice that Paul assumes we will become weary.

Faithful parenting is exhausting.

The encouragement isn't that we will never struggle.

The encouragement is to keep going.

God sees every unseen act of obedience.

Nothing done for Christ is ever wasted.

Children Are Like Root Vegetables

One of the greatest challenges of parenting is that much of the growth happens where we cannot see it.

Root vegetables spend their growing season developing beneath the soil.

From the surface, it may appear that very little is happening.

Yet beneath the ground, life is quietly taking shape.

Children are often much the same.

The seeds of Scripture, correction, encouragement, and faithful example are taking root long before visible fruit appears.

Parents often become discouraged because they judge today's behavior instead of trusting God's long-term work.

But the growing season isn't over.

God is still at work beneath the surface.

Faithfulness Matters More Than Perfection

No parent disciples their children perfectly.

We all fall short.

We lose patience.

We miss opportunities.

We wish we had handled situations differently.

Yet God is remarkably gracious.

He delights in using ordinary, imperfect parents who continually return to Him for wisdom.

Where we are lacking, He provides His Spirit.

Where we need guidance, He gives us His Word.

Where we need help, He often provides wise counselors, faithful churches, and the encouragement of other believers.

Our hope has never rested in perfect parenting.

Our hope rests in a perfect Savior.

Lord,

In this moment
We lay at your feet
The weightiness of discouragement
And the sense we get
That our efforts in shepherding
The flock you've given us
Are far from sufficient.

Meet us now
In our feelings of doubt
That we're making a difference
Despite our good efforts
To train up our children
In the way they should go.

And pull us to our feet
Once again,

Melting away the bondage of discouragement.

For we know
That through You
And Your Spirit,

The seeds we sow—

When planted in faith—

Are Yours to make grow.

Though we plant

And water,

It is Your abiding work

In our homes

And in our hearts

That makes the seed sprout,

Not our own might.

Where we are lacking

In the disciplining

And discipling,

Nudge us further,

Leaning into the resources

And the counsel

That are Your common graces.

Point us ever toward Your Truth,

Not our own truth.

Bring us again to Your Holy Word,

As we ourselves

Discern folly from wisdom

And work to teach our children

The same.

It could be said

That children are like root vegetables,

Where what is on the surface

Is not all there is,

Nor are we able to appreciate

The prize beneath

Until the growing season is spent.

Until then, keep us faithful

In our efforts to weed,

To water,

To nourish,

With the light of Your love

Through Your teachings,

Genuinely personified

In our actions as parents.

Assure us that our diligence

Will pay off at harvest,

Though not guaranteed,

But infinitely more likely

When we walk in step with You

And lead our little ones

To do the same.

Lord, lift the discouragement

That clouds this current season,

Giving us the steady faith

That we will reap a plentiful harvest

If we do not give up.

Your job is to plant faithfully.

God's job is to bring the growth.

The conversations you think your children aren't hearing...

The prayers you wonder if they're noticing...

The Bible stories that seem forgotten...

The patient corrections that feel repetitive...

None of them are wasted.

God is often doing His deepest work beneath the surface, long before we can see the harvest.

So keep watering.

Keep praying.

Keep teaching.

Keep loving.

And above all, do not give up.

The Lord who called you to parent your children is faithful to walk with you through every season. Trust Him with the harvest while you remain faithful in the planting.
