A Prayer for a Sick Child: Finding Peace While Caring for an Ill Child

What Does the Bible Say About Praying for the Sick?

James encourages believers to bring every illness before the Lord.

"Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him... The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." — James 5:13–18

Prayer is not a last resort.

It is one of God's appointed means of caring for His people.

We pray because God hears.

Lord,

How it hurts our hearts

To see our dearest little ones

Afflicted with infirmities

And the pains of fever.

Hold us, now, in our helplessness.

Teach us a heart of gratitude

For the tremendous gift of health,

And let these moments of sickness

Allow us to better appreciate

Seasons of wellness and vigor.

May our children feel the warmth of Your love

Through our hands which hold theirs tight

And offer comforts to ease their malaise.

In each snuggle during midnight cartoons,

And every back rub and extra storybook—

Let these be a testimony of the God who sees us,

Who cares for us.

May these moments, despite their bitter worry,

Be opportunities for sweet fellowship,

And reminders to our children

Of the great lengths we would go to

To see them well.

A reminder in tangible form

That if given the choice,

My life for yours."*

God, heal our dearest little babes,

And restore them to health with quickness.

Let them not suffer,

And quiet our anxious hearts in the meantime,

Drawing us back to a remembrance

Of Your sovereignty,

Your care over all things,
